Kingdom FM Local Heroes awards -

Donna Calder heard that Kingdom FM were presenting Local Heroes awards, so she nominated Dorothy Markham for the Carer category.  A couple of days before the awards ceremony, Dorothy got a phone call asking if she would like to attend the ceremony.  Never one to turn down a party, Dorothy said she would be delighted to attend.

The evening came.  The Rothes Halls main hall was decorated for a party (looked a bit like the Creiff Hydro at Christmas party time).  Every sponsor had their own table, at which were seated some of their own guests - and of course the nominees for the category they were sponsoring.

We sat down to a nice meal, with drinks and got to know the sponsor (he will do you a very good deal on electric wheel-chairs or any other mobility stuff you need) and the other invitees.

After the meal, it was on to a bit of entertainment before the awards ceremony began.  Shereen Nanjiani told us a little about each nominee and the sponsors followed up with the opening of the golden envelopes.  It was interesting to see the different presentation styles of the sponsors, and how this reflected their own individual background (politician, college lecturer, policeman).  The stories about the individual nominees were very heartening.  It was good to hear that there are so many people out there who are prepared to go the extra mile for the benefit of others, sometimes at great personal risk to themselves.

When it came to the Carer award, Dorothy was surprised when she was called up to receive the award and certificate scroll.  Luckily, they didn't expect winners to make a speech - we could have been there all night.

According to the Courier, the winners were aged from 5 to 75!  Either they asked Dorothy to write her age down and couldn't read the answer, or they were using journalistic licence!

The evening finished off with more entertainment while the winners and sponsors went out for a photo session (see copies of article and photo from the Courier dated 2nd September 2009, plus photo of the Award "trophy").

Dorothy would like to thank Donna Calder for nominating her, and of course she would also like to thank ... (oh, sorry - forgot this isn't the BAFTAs or Oscars).
